Liposuction
is the permanent removal of fat cells. It is a wonderful procedure
to correct a double chin or fullness along the jaw line in the younger
patient with good skin tone. Men can often have this procedure even
later in life due to the thicker male skin. Patients who have loose
skin as well as fullness may be a better candidate for a facelift.
Liposuction is a routine part of a facelift procedure for many patients.
During the consult Dr. Maloney will be able to advise you as to
which procedure may be more appropriate for you.
The
procedure can be performed under local or twilight sleep. Dr. Maloney
uses a tumescent liposuction technique to help reduce bruising after
the procedure. Generally an incision approximately one centimeter
in length is placed in a crease under the chin. If a patient has
fullness along the jaw line, a small incision is placed immediately
behind each earlobe to allow contouring of this area.
A dressing is
applied over night and replaced the following day with a support
sling, which is generally worn for a week. Patients usually have
little to no pain following the procedure due to temporary numbness,
which lasts for several weeks up to three months. Dr. Maloney also
recommends lymphatic drainage treatments to be performed by an aesthetician
to help decrease swelling.
