Dr Maloney Course Director for Rhinoplasty Course in Mexico
I was very honored to be asked to teach a plastic surgery of the nose course in Irapuato, Mexico. It was interesting to share our techniques with the Central and South American doctors. In the U.S. there are two types of rhinoplasty open and closed. The closed techniques have all the incisions on the inside of the nose. The open places an incision across the skin between the nostrils. I perform the closed approach most of the time because I prefer to have as few visible scars as possible. Modern reshaping of the nose focuses on not only making the nose look better but work better as well.
When I perform nose surgery I do not have three or four models and they get to pick one. I listen to the patient's goals and then try to create a nose that meets their concerns and is in proportion with the rest of their features. The computer imager is a great tool that can help the patient see potential changes before they have surgery.
In the past patients often considered nose surgery uncomfortable and associated with bruising around the eyes. Most of this is actually associated with the packing that doctors would place on the inside of the nose. Today most patients have little bruising and discomfort as I do not use packing. In addition to giving multiple lectures, I performed a rhinoplasty procedure on a young man.
I found the doctors to be very appreciative and welcoming. Most towns in Mexico have a bull fighting ring. During one of our evenings we had dinner at one and had a chance to try our skill at bull fighting. Although a lot of fun, I realized a man of my size would have a short matador career, so I will stick with facial plastic surgery.
Dr Maloney was the invited international co-director of a Rhinoplasty Course in Irapuato, Mexico. In addittion to giving several lectures on the latest techniques in Rhinoplasty he performed live surgery on a young man.
